15-Year-Old Girl Killed by Stray Bullet in Round Lake Beach Home

In a heartbreaking incident that has shaken the Round Lake Beach community, 15-year-old Valeria Rodriguez lost her life on Wednesday evening when a stray bullet entered her family’s home. The teenager, described by her mother as “sweet and loving,” was fatally wounded while sitting down to eat dinner, becoming an unintended victim of senseless gun violence.

Emergency Response and Initial Investigation

The tragedy unfolded around 9:10 p.m. on Wednesday in the 1500 block of Cherokee Drive. The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Beach Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls reporting what callers initially thought was an explosion. Upon arrival, officers discovered the grim reality: a young girl had been shot inside her residence. Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli provided details on the preliminary investigation:
  • The “explosion” sound reported by callers was actually a gunshot
  • Someone had fired a gun outside near the home
  • A stray bullet entered the house and struck Valeria
  • The victim was rushed to an area hospital but was pronounced dead
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek later identified the victim as Valeria Rodriguez, confirming that an autopsy showed she died from a gunshot wound to the torso.

Family’s Grief and Community Support

Yurele Gallardo, Valeria’s mother, expressed her anguish, stating, “My daughter was a sweet, loving daughter who did not deserve to lose her life in this way.” The family, facing this unimaginable loss, has turned to the community for support. Gallardo created a GoFundMe account to help with expenses, as both she and her husband are currently not working. The community’s response has been swift, with the fundraiser already surpassing $7,500 in donations.

Ongoing Investigation and Progress

As the community mourns, law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to bring justice for Valeria. Covelli provided an update on Friday morning, highlighting the progress made:
  • The Lake County Major Crime Task Force and Round Lake Beach police detectives have developed several leads
  • A person of interest has been identified
  • A search warrant was executed at the home of the person of interest
  • During the search, a firearm was located and seized
  • The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues
Investigators are expected to review the facts and circumstances of the case with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Crime Scene Investigation and Witness Accounts

The investigation has been thorough and expansive:
  • Police scoured the area near the home, repeatedly expanding the crime scene
  • Investigators were seen in Greenview Park, directly across from the victim’s home
  • Officers went door-to-door, interviewing neighbors
  • Multiple agencies, including the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Villa Police Department, and Round Lake Park Police Department, were present at the scene
Neighbors reported hearing what they initially thought was an explosion or firework, followed by the heart-wrenching screams of Valeria’s mother. A visible bullet hole in the window of the home serves as a stark reminder of the tragedy.

Community and Political Response

The incident has drawn attention from local political figures. U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider, whose district includes Round Lake Beach, called the news “absolutely devastating” and emphasized the urgent need to address gun violence in communities.

Call for Information

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The Round Lake Beach Police Department can be reached at 847-546-2127. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on communities. As Valeria Rodriguez’s family grieves the loss of their beloved daughter and sister, the Round Lake Beach community and law enforcement agencies are united in their pursuit of justice and their desire to prevent such senseless tragedies in the future.
