Severe Multi-Vehicle Collision Near Antioch Sends Five to Hospital, One in Critical Condition

A harrowing five-vehicle crash on Route 173 east of Route 45 in unincorporated Antioch Thursday evening resulted in multiple injuries, including one critical, prompting a swift response from emergency services. The incident, which occurred around 6:05 p.m., led to the hospitalization of five individuals and necessitated the deployment of a medical helicopter for the most severely injured victim.

Incident Overview

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Antioch Fire Protection District quickly mobilized to the scene following reports of a multi-vehicle collision with injuries. Upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies encountered a complex crash site involving five vehicles, setting in motion a comprehensive investigation and rescue operation.

Sequence of Events

According to Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the preliminary investigation revealed the following sequence of events:

  1. A Ford F-550, hauling an excavator and driven by a 52-year-old Waukegan man, was traveling westbound on Route 173 approaching Route 45.
  2. For reasons yet to be determined, the Ford driver failed to slow down for traffic stopped at a red light.
  3. The Ford collided with the rear of a Nissan Versa, operated by a 23-year-old man from Savoy.
  4. The impact propelled the Nissan into a stationary Volkswagen Atlas, driven by a 47-year-old man from Twin Lakes, Wisconsin.
  5. The Volkswagen was then pushed into a Chevrolet Silverado, whose driver was a 39-year-old man from Woodstock.
  6. The momentum of the initial collision caused the Nissan to sideswipe a stopped Kia K5, driven by a 60-year-old Antioch resident.

Injuries and Medical Response

The crash resulted in varying degrees of injuries to several individuals involved:

  • The Nissan’s driver (23, Savoy) and front-seat passenger (25, Champaign) were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • A 24-year-old woman from Champaign, who was a rear-seat passenger in the Nissan, sustained critical, life-threatening injuries. She was airlifted by a LifeNet helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center.
  • The Volkswagen driver was taken to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • The Ford driver was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center, also with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • Fortunately, the drivers of the Chevrolet and Kia escaped the incident without injury.

Emergency Response and Scene Management

Battalion Chief Joseph DuShane of the Antioch Fire Protection District confirmed that a LifeNet helicopter, based in McHenry, was dispatched to the scene. The aircraft landed directly on Route 173 to facilitate the rapid transport of the critically injured passenger.

The severity of the crash and the subsequent investigation necessitated the closure of Route 173 just east of Route 45 for several hours. This closure allowed for a thorough examination of the crash site and the safe removal of the damaged vehicles.

Ongoing Investigation

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit has taken charge of the ongoing investigation into the incident. Key aspects of the investigation are likely to include:

  • Determining the exact cause of the Ford F-550’s failure to slow down
  • Assessing potential contributing factors such as road conditions, visibility, or vehicle malfunctions
  • Gathering statements from witnesses and involved parties
  • Analyzing any available traffic camera footage or vehicle data recorders
  • Evaluating the structural integrity of the vehicles involved and their safety systems

Community Impact and Safety Considerations

This incident is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilant driving, especially in high-traffic areas and near intersections. It highlights the potential for chain-reaction collisions and the devastating consequences resulting from a momentary lapse in attention or vehicle control.

Local authorities may use this incident to reinforce safety messages and potentially review traffic management strategies along this stretch of Route 173. The community’s thoughts are undoubtedly with the critically injured woman and all those affected by this traumatic event.

As the investigation continues, more details may shed light on the cause of this serious collision and potentially inform future safety measures or driver education initiatives in the Antioch area and beyond.
