Wauconda Man Charged with DUI After UTV Crash Injures Family Members

On Sunday evening, a tragic incident unfolded in the quiet Woodland Mobile Home Park in Wauconda, Illinois. Around 6:40 p.m., emergency services were called to 410 Barrington Road following reports of a serious crash involving a utility task vehicle (UTV).

Emergency Response

The Wauconda Fire District and Police Department swiftly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a harrowing sight: a UTV had rolled over in the cul-de-sac at the dead end of the mobile home park, leaving three individuals and a dog in various states of distress.

Injuries and Medical Response

The crash resulted in injuries to all human occupants of the UTV:

  • A younger adult male, later identified as the driver’s son, suffered severe injuries including a head injury and a broken arm. He was immediately transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, a Level 1 trauma center.
  • An adult female, identified as the driver’s wife, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
  • The driver, a 49-year-old man, suffered minor scrapes and bruises but declined medical transport.
  • Remarkably, the dog accompanying the family escaped unharmed.

Three ambulances were dispatched to manage the medical emergency, with a Mundelein ambulance covering Wauconda’s fire station during the incident.

Legal Consequences

Arrest and Charges

The driver of the UTV, identified as Chad C. Dutner of Wauconda, was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence. Following the incident:

  • A search warrant was executed to obtain blood and urine samples from Dutner.
  • The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and approved charges of aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily harm and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Court Proceedings

Dutner appeared in First Appearance Court on Monday morning, where prosecutors filed a petition to detain him pending trial. During the court proceedings:

  • Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Theis revealed that the seriously injured male victim was Dutner’s son, and the female victim was Dutner’s wife.
  • Theis reported that Dutner showed clear signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, a strong odor of alcohol, confusion, and slow responses.
  • It was disclosed that, according to Dutner’s wife, the couple had been drinking since 9 a.m. on the day of the incident.

Lake County Judge James Newman ordered Dutner to be held in the Lake County Jail until a detention hearing, initially scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. However, this hearing was postponed and is expected to take place on Wednesday afternoon.
