The Mundelein Police Department responded to a shooting at the Lake Plaza shopping center in the 700 block of South Lake Street on Monday evening around 7:10 p.m. The incident has resulted in the death of a 21-year-old Wheeling man.
According to Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli, the victim was transported to an area hospital in a privately owned vehicle. Shortly after, officers were notified that the man had been brought to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Investigation Details
Despite hospital staff’s efforts to save him, the victim succumbed to his injuries. The individuals who transported the victim to the hospital left prior to officers’ arrival.
A heavy police presence was observed for hours around the eastern side of the shopping complex, near Jay’s Liquors, ACTION Martial Arts, and Supermercado Gisselle. Crime scene tape was erected in the parking lot, and investigators were actively collecting evidence.
Preliminary Findings
Investigators believe the shooting was potentially targeted and likely perpetrated by a single gunman. The Lake County Major Crime Task Force was called to assist Mundelein police detectives in the investigation.
Next Steps
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is in the process of scheduling an autopsy. The victim’s identity has not yet been released. Major Crime Task Force investigators and Mundelein police detectives continue to investigate the homicide actively.
