The Dunn Museum in Libertyville, Lake County, IL, is being expanded and renovated. They’re adding 3,000 square feet of space to showcase incredible comic book art. This will allow them to show large-scale paintings and temporary exhibits.
And, of course, the protagonist here is Alex Ross, the legendary comic book illustrator. It is said his work resembles the work of Norman Rockwell with superheroes! Ross’s portfolio includes a range of Marvel and DC heroes. His work has been shown at the Dunn Museum, but this time, it’s back—and in a big way.
The new gallery will hold over 100 works by Ross, including three enormous murals that stand as tall as a person. Ross is also making two new pieces just for this show. Guests can sit alongside these giant heroes and feel as if they’re in a comic book universe.
What makes the museum expand? Ross wanted to exhibit his work there. He could have chosen the Smithsonian, but he decided the Dunn Museum instead. This is a huge deal!
The gallery will cost an estimated $163,000 to build. The museum hopes to secure a state grant to fund the project. They’re tapping money they’d put away when the museum moved a few years ago.
The bigger gallery is more than just a showcase for Alex Ross’s artwork. It will also give the museum the ability to plan other major traveling shows in the coming years, display more works from its collection, and open new exhibits faster.
The museum is part of the Lake County Forest Preserve District. This new gallery will bring new visitors to the preserves while they enjoy the artwork.” The gallery will also charge a fee to access the exhibits, which will help support the preserves.
The new gallery will open as soon as possible. The museum staff is delighted to have the space available for these massive, brightly colored artworks of superheroes. This is a chance for comic book and art lovers to experience something new!
