Lake Zurich Cheerleading Scandal: When School Spirit Meets Financial Fraud

Two former cheerleading coaches at Lake Zurich High School were arrested and charged with embezzling more than $38,000 from the school’s coffers — a duplicitous tale of red flags and hocus pocus with the books. The saga played out like a true-crime soap opera, with money laundering allegations, undisclosed invoices, and a social media paper trail that, upon reflection, has become a tragic irony.

A Pair Behind the Drama

Gabriele N. Kelly, 26, of Algonquin, and Kaylin Dietrich, the ex-cheer coach, are accused of successfully funneling cash intended for student athletes into their bank accounts. Kelly voluntarily turned herself into the police on March 19, 2025, but Dietrich remains free with an active arrest warrant out for him.

  • The Charges:
    • Two counts of theft (Class 2 felonies)
    • Two counts of money laundering (Class 3 felonies)
    • Potential penalties could include restitution and prison time

The scheme came to light after the District 95 Business Department noticed irregularities in coaching invoices during a routine audit last year. Deputy Police Chief Colin Gaffney described the duo’s actions as “unlawfully diverting funds,” with fake invoices allegedly masking personal purchases.

From Celebration to Scandal

In a twist worthy of a Netflix documentary, Dietrich’s 2020 hiring announcement on the school’s athletics X (formerly Twitter) account now feels painfully ironic. The post praised her “wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion” while welcoming her as the new face of the cheer program.

What went wrong?
Investigators believe the coaches exploited their oversight of team finances—a common vulnerability in extracurricular programs where volunteers or part-time staff manage budgets with minimal scrutiny.

The Ripple Effects

Superintendent Dr. Kelley Gallt emphasized the district’s “diligence” in catching the discrepancies, but the case raises tough questions:

  • How many other schools lack robust financial checks for extracurricular activities?
  • Should coaches with fiscal responsibilities undergo stricter auditing?

Kelly’s release under the Illinois SAFE-T Act (which prevents pretrial detention for non-violent offenses) has also sparked debate about accountability for white-collar crimes in educational settings.

Lessons for Schools and Communities

While Lake Zurich High scrambles to rebuild trust, other districts might take note:

  1. Audit Regularly: Even small programs need financial transparency.
  2. Separate Responsibilities: Avoid letting one person control invoicing and approvals.
  3. Train Staff: Recognizing red flags (e.g., vague invoices, unusual vendors) can prevent fraud.

“This isn’t just about missing money—it’s about violating the trust of students and families,” said a local parent anonymously. “You expect coaches to model integrity, not cunning.”

What’s Next?

Kelly is slated for arraignment on April 9, while authorities continue searching for Dietrich. The district has cut ties with both coaches, but the emotional toll on students—who cheered under Dietrich’s leadership—may linger long after the court cases conclude.

Final Thought:
Financial fraud in schools often flies under the radar until it’s too late. As communities rally behind their teams, this case serves as a stark reminder: trust, but verify.
